Weir Wood RS 200 Open, Part of the SouthEast Area Series, July 10th. 2005.
Weir Wood laid on some of the best sailing conditions of the season so
far when they held their 2005 RS 200 open meeting on Sunday 10th. July.
A good fleet of 24 boats was treated to brilliant sunshine and a 10 to 15
knot Easterly wind, which is probably the best direction for the
reservoir. This allowed the principle race officer, Martin Pascoe, to lay
a windward/leeward course almost the full length of the lake.
A clean start in race one saw the all girl team of Sue Antonelli and Jo
Lloyd lead around the windward buoy followed by Simon Gillow and Emma
Harniman. With the wind swinging either side of East there was potential
for large gains and on the second lap David and Matthew Giles found a
very favourable wind bend to catch the girls as they tried to cross on
port. Having to complete a penalty turn allowed Giles to establish a good
lead, which he held to the finish. Mike Chapman and Sheridan Killwick
staged a good recovery from an indifferent start to take third.
Race two saw the committee boat side of the line pay due to a late
windshift. Andrew and Jeraldine Peters were the first to pick up on this
and established a comfortable lead around the first buoy followed by Andi
Riley and Julie Marsden. Showing good downwind speed, Giles pulled
through the fleet to take the lead on lap three. They held this until the
end.
After a shortish lunch break to make the most of the superb sailing
conditions, the fleet was away again. This time the pin end paid and
allowed Giles establish a lead by the windward buoy followed by John and
Bruce Ramshaw. Simon Croper and Pete Rooley worked their way into second
by lap two with Antonelli third. On the last lap the girls broke through
to second but were unable to catch Giles.
With three wins Giles was able to hand the helm over to his 12-year-old
son for the last race. In the shifting breeze the right hand side of the
upwind leg paid handsomely and Chapman lead around the windward buoy
followed by Riley and Antonelli. There were numerous place changes but
Chapman hung on, as did Riley to record their best results of the day.
Giles junior finished a very creditable 4th.
An exhausted and sun burnt fleet headed for the clubhouse after what can
only be described as a classic sailing day. The final event of the SEAS
series will be held at Stewartby in September with the overall title
hanging precariously in the balance.
