GUL RS800 RS Racing Circuit at Stokes Bay

Glorious sunshine and the promise of the most competitive racing drew 800's from all over the country to Stokes Bay for round 3 of the GUL RS800 Racing circuit. Even the majority of the really hot Hayling Island 800s were tempted away from home to take on the many newcomers to this flourishing fleet. The heat of the battle disappointed nobody, with no fewer than 10 different boats scoring results in the top 3. The predominently light winds, strong tides and fleet of 42 boats ensured that consistency won the day.

The 800's sailed a windward/leeward course with a downwind gate whilst the 600/300's shared a separate course. With 104 RS200/400's just round the corner at Lee on Solent SC the Eastern end of the Solent was covered with RS's doing what they do best, enjoying top sailing.

Mike Lennon, newly crewed by Craig Davies discarded a 6th , won race 3 and took overall honours from Neil Upton-Brown and Roz Allen who opened with a discard of 15th and thereafter were never out of the top five, winning race 5. Richard Lovering and Richard Kent , a point adrift in third overall were always in the top 6 apart from a discarded OCS in the last race. Going into the last race any of these 3 could have won the event, Nick Peters won the race with Lennon's second.

Winning no fewer than 3 of the 6 races, Nick Peters and Caroline Litchfield couldn't find any consistency, having to count a 7th and 11th for fourth place overall. Discarding an 11th and winning race 4 were the key features of Tim and Jo Johnson's fifth place overall from top ladies Tracey Covell and Vanda Zodorozny in 6th. Tracey and Vanda also took the merit award.

Mike Lennon, in a fit of remarkable modesty, commenting on his success remarked that all he had done was make reasonable starts and keep out of trouble - if only it was always that simple. Meanwhile Nick Peters, struggling to retain some dignity to the whole affair, was reputed to have said that it took real talent to win 3 races, and still finish outside of the top 3 overall. And yes the Hayling boats did live up to their reputation, taking 5 of the top six places. The Chew Valley couple of Tim and Jo Johnson getting in the way; the Johnsons had more than a useful result at Round 1 of the GUL RS Racing Circuit at Grafham and could score a top overall position on the circuit. Winners of the Grafham event, Steve Irish and Martin Gotrel were seventh overall after not a great Sunday but also look well on the pace.

If Nick Peters needed considerable skill to win three races and finish only fourth overall then Alan Olive/Mark Warren must be a genius to slip from fourth overall on Saturday night to 25th overall with three OCS's on Sunday; now that is a class act!! The talk from the weekend was that there will be a bumper turnout at for the GUL RS Eurocup in Lake Como at the end of May; lets hope its as sunny there.
