The RS800s that made the trip down to the Gul RS Grand Prix
event in Beer,
With the forecast looking pretty fruity for Sunday, 4 races were held on Saturday to make the most of the good wind. The first three races were held in a 10-15 knots south easterly and big rolling swell making it tricky to get the boats fully ripping upwind but great for downwind surfing.
The first race saw the fleet raft up on the pin end of the start line allowing Justin Deal and Ollie Page to get away and hold the lead to the finish. James Date and Toby Wincer soon untangled themselves from the startline melée and caught up to second by the finish. Dave Hivey and James Stewart sailed to an excellent third in their first wavey open since starting racing 800s this year.
Justin and Ollie got away again in the second race, chased hard round the course by Jamie Hilton and Chris Martin, James and Toby, and Laurie Fitzjohn-Sykes and Sarah Crossman.
Dan Kilsby and Bart Bridgen got a good start in the third race and lead around the first lap. James and Toby were a bit quicker and also took advantage of a few windshifts on the second beat to get past and sail away to take the win. Dan and Bart held on for second and Dave and James took another good third.
The forth race saw the breeze pick to 15 - 20 knots which made great sailing conditions even better! The wind also shifted right meaning that the leading boats all overstood the first bottom mark. Dan and Bart were the recipients of this change in fortune and took the lead closely followed by Andy Jeffries and Allyson Oddy. The two teams swapped places all the way round the four laps with Dan and Bart just squeezing past at the last mark to take the win. Justin and Ollie sailed to third, all the more impressive considering they had swapped boats with Ian Martin and Adam Broughton on the water after a breakage in the third race.
The members of Beer Sailing Club put on a cracking social in their newly finished clubhouse, even inviting some sailors back to sleep in their houses instead of camping in the torrential rain, which was very much appreciated!
The next day saw sun but very strong winds, gusting in excess of 28 knots on the race course. With the wind and waves due to build the race officer made the sensible decision to cancel racing for the day. This allowed the sailors to enjoy ice creams in the sun in the picturesque village.
Justin and Ollie took the overall win beating James and Toby
by just one point, Dan and Bart were third. It was good to see some new faces
joining in the fun and hopefully we will see some more at the Zhik Eurocup in
Carnac 28 - 31 May, and the next Gul Grand Prix
event at Hayling Island on the 25/26 June. Thanks
again to the race team and all of the members of Beer for putting on a
fantastic event and I look forward to seeing everyone in
