Fat Face RS800 Racing at Datchet 12/13 June 2004 Cloudy skies and what looked like a good breeze from on the shore, were soon found wanting as race one got underway with some sizeable shifts across the course giving some difficult and rather tactical sailing for the 28 entries to the fourth open meeting of the series. Steve Irish and Martin Gotrel in Magic Marine had a good battle with Chris Haworth and Stuart Aston for first place, with Steve and Martin taking the gun from Chris and Stu. Ian Martin and Claire Booth sailed an excellent race to gain third from Spod Olive and Jane Norris in fourth. The second race saw Chris and Stu take the winner?s gun from Steve and Martin. Doing the honourable thing, the winners had to retire after a startline incident with Ian and Claire who were duly promoted to second, with third place going to Paul and Julie Taylor who had sailed an excellent race. Race three and Steve and Martin set off over the horizon with Chris and Stu in second and Alex Davies and Sarah Hughes just holding off James Date and Karen Falcon for third place. Sunday dawned sunny and lighter, and as we all soon found out, even more shifty. This didn't seem to disturb the Team Magic Marine form, with Steve and Martin taking another win with Clive and Phil Goodwin flying round in second and Spod and Jane third. The fifth race finished with the same result, but the wind was being really rather awkward providing twin wire gusts around some massive holes and 180 degree shifts; this saw some interesting results through the fleet but still failed to disrupt the leaders. The race officer, having had enough of the amusement, wisely called for an early end to the series. So once again Steve Irish and Martin Gotrel win, Spod Olive and Jane Norris scoring their best result yet, were very happy with second, and Ian Martin and Claire Booth taking third overall after their impressive performance on the Saturday. An excellent weekend despite some difficult conditions, but clearly not difficult enough. When the winner discards a first, what were the rest of us doing??? Full Results
