Day 5 It was a hot, sun baked dinghy park but no wind. After an hours postponement PRO David Campbell James called the fleet into a very light SSW sea breeze. Up until this point the PRO had not put a foot wrong and there had not been a general recall in the previous 8 races. That was until Olympic coach Mark Littlejohn/Emma Clark were pathfinders; having done the gate start seminar on the Saturday he now made a right bolognese of the first gate, earned a right ticking off from the guard boat and duckhams later on. On the third attempt race 9 started in 5-7 knots of breeze. The pants were still working as Tom and Jo Hewitson were really motoring up the first beat to have a very healthy lead to win although pushed at the end by Dave and Emma Derby. Carveth/Matthews were third with Sydenham/Vaudrey fourth with Burlton/Clark not far behind in 6th. Giles and Willan had a disaster and were a distant 33rd. Calculators were now out and they showed that Sydenham/Vaudrey could still catch Burlton/Clark. This soon became academic as the wind had become very soft on the final run and as the time by which the last race had to be started rapidly approached it showed no sign of returning causing the final race to be abandoned. Hence the RS200’s gained a new National Champion in Craig Burlton. After so many seconds, thirds and fourths at major RS events Burlton was a popular winner. Fiona Clark became the first crew to win two RS200 National Championships with two different helms; not bad for someone who does not believe she is a top crew! Micky Wright/Howie Enkal were clear winners of the Silver Division in 26th whilst Jo Wotton/Nigel Harniman from Wembley were emphatic winners of the Bronze division in 38th. Steve Dunn/Alex Good/ Richard Adams were the winning trio of the Buddy system sponsored by West Country Boat Repairs. Geoff Carveth was top Masters, Trudie Danbury was first lady helm, Sam Littlejohn first youth helm and Emma Derby first junior. Bristol Corinthian Yacht Club were the top club for the second year in a row. Richard Yerbury and Vicky won the final duckhams for having such a domestic during the final race that Richard jumped out the boat only to remember in the water that he could not swim and Vicky had never helmed! All that was left was for a hum dinger of final prize giving party. Highcliffe SC had been magnificent hosts of a very successful GUL RS200 Nationals. The atmosphere ashore was relaxed helped by a great setting. For a relatively small club many members had put in a lot of hard work greatly appreciated by the sailors. David Campbell James and his race team had done a really first class job to the extent there was not even a hint of a niggle about any aspect of the event. Pete Vincent. Day 4 It was the morning after the wig, wands and wellies theme night, this along with a very full dance floor meant many of the fleet were glad there was a delayed start so they could find their normal clothes and brain cells. Mid day brought the arrival of the expected sea breeze although for the second day in a row it never got above the 8-10 knots from due south. So the fleet launched into almost identical conditions to the Tuesday to resume battle in the GUL RS200 Nationals. LDC guru and RS legend Nick Peters crewed by son James was pathfinder for race 7 and did such a good job he was third round the windward mark. Generally early had paid and 2003 National Champion David Giles crewed by Jane Willan took the lead early in the race to win. Winner of the Duckhams the previous day 2002 National Champion Tom Hewitson, hence wearing the “funky pants”, crewed by wife Jo, was in fine form in second. Defending National Champions Lee Sydenham and Anne Vaudrey were third whilst Steve Dunn/Noelle Vidal conclusively proved that drinking your own body weight in rum and coke was fast. After a poor championship so far they were fourth just ahead of the Peters and overall leader Craig Burlton/Fiona Clark. Race 8 and David Giles/Jane Willan were having a field day to lead from early on to record their second bullet of the day. The funky pants had become fast pants with the Hewitsons again second, Burlton/Clark were third to conclude a very satisfactory solid day with Dunn/Vidal fourth and 2001 National Champion Geoff Carveth/Loopy Lucy Matthews in 5th. That evening Tom Hewitson kept his fast pants much to his relief after wife Jo’s admission she had seen no action as he had kept them on all day, including in bed! Overall and Burlton/Clarks lead was down to a point on 19pts from David Giles/Jane Willan with the other three previous National Champions a little further behind but very much in contact with two races left. Pete Vincent Day 3 Day three of the RS200 National Championships, Highcliffe, saw a new face at the front of the fleet with the father and son pairing of Phil and Dan Sowden taking two bullets on home waters. Race five was started under clear blue skies with a light southerly sea-breeze with John Greenland and Pippa Williams acting as pathfinder to the fleet. While the majority of the fleet elected to start late the Sowdens opted to be first out of the gate. By the windward mark it was clear this was the right choice as they rounded close to a minute ahead of their nearest rivals. Close racing ensued for the remainder of the three lap race with even the smallest of errors resulting in the loss of several places. Behind the Sowdens were Stuart and Jane Hudson (five times Firefly national champions) in second with Greenland and Williams in third. Race six was opened by Geoff Carveth, sailing with Lucy Matthews, and again the Sowdens opted to start first. This time more of the fleet decided to go early, hoping to follow the locals, which reaped its dividends by the windward mark with Carveth and all those starting late absent from the top ten. Mark Littlejohn secured second place ahead of Craig Burlton and Fiona Clarke in third. Burlton/Clarke continue with their domination of the fleet with a 12 point lead over the fleet. A three way for second is between David Giles and Jane Willan (2003 National Champion), the Hudsons, and Lee Sydenham and Anne Vaudry (2004 National Champion). With four races remaining and similar conditions to today expected the finale of what is clearly the toughest 200 nationals to date looks set to be exciting. Four current and past 200 national champions are in the top seven with only 12 points separating them. John Greenland Day 2 A lovely sunny day with the breeze building. A few of the fleet and the race officer suffered from too much scrumpy the night before, courtesy of West Country Boat Repairs. With 10 minutes to go, the pathfinders donned their fetching wigs. Mickie Wright & Howie Enkel port-tacked the fleet in fine style, with a fight to get out of the gate first by many. Due to the header on port, most of the fleet were too high and running back in front of the gate causing multiple collisions. Craig Burlton pulled away from the fleet, with Mark Littlejohn, Lee Sydenham and Geoff Carveth in hot pursuit, finishing in that order. Jonathan Lewis was pathfinder for race 4, and not many fancied starting early this time. The breeze had now increased and going right saw Stuart Hudson leading up the first beat. By the end of the race David Giles had pulled through to first, with Littlejohn, Lewis and Burlton behind. Mark Littlejohn’s 2 2nds gave him overall for the day. Mickie Wright Day 1 With a fantastic day for England at Old Trafford, many of the favourites for the RS200 GUL National Championships 2005 were recording cricket scores themselves on the first day of racing at Highcliffe SC. Race one got away in a patchy NW offshore across Christchurch Bay, with pathfinders Marshall & Heather King ensuring that the fleet had a clean start and, with the left paying, tacking off soon after being released. With the light wind the course was shortened to 2 laps, with David Giles & Jane Gillan 1st, guest star Craig Burlton & Fiona Clarke 2nd, and Hamish Walker & Robert Millar 3rd. Race 2, and with a huge lift and more pressure to the right many of the early starter were initially stranded, allowing Pete ‘Ugly’ Vincent to recover from a 42nd in race 1 to sniggle through the middle to lead at the windward mark. Vincent held this to the 2nd run, just allowing Tom & Jo Hewitson to take the lead and the win, with Lee Sydenham & Anne Vaudray 3rd, Geoff Carveth and Loopy Matthews 4th, and the consistent Jon Lewis & Katy Nichol 5th. Day 2 promises to be as interesting as the ashes, with four past RS200 National Champions in 3rd to 6th place behind joint overnight leaders Walker/Millar and Lewis/Nichol. Paul Goodwin
