RS 800 Winter Championship at Grafham Water Sailing Club
20 800’s braved a horrible forecasts and turned up at Grafham for the 1st event of the year, to be greeted with a chilly 8-10Knot breeze. Most of the pre-sailing chat related to views on the proposed new main design and what to wear given the 4deg temperatures.
Once racing got underway, it was Laurie Fiztjohn-Sykes and Dan Allin who came in from hard left, lead round the top mark and only briefly lost their lead to Nick Charles and Christian Humphrey who in turn let Tom Halhead and Stu Jagger through on the last run.
In race 2 Nick and Christian lead throughout, followed by Tom and Stu and Roger Philips and Will Crocker, who then did a horizon job in the final race of the day chased by Laurie and Dan and Nick and Christian. Despite the cold, a generally satisfied fleet retired to the bar to watch the rugby after a day of very close racing.
Those who thought Saturday was cold were in for a shock on Sunday when we turn up to a combination of snow, sleet and temperatures of -5 including wind-chill.
Having put on all the sailing kit available the fleet launched at the last minute and started in 15 Knots of breeze which built throughout the day. Nick and Christian lead for 3 laps, but let Tom and Stu through on the final one. 3rd were the ever consistent Roger and Will.
Roger and Will then followed this up with win in the next, followed by Dave and Emma Hivey and Laurie and Dan. By the final race a depleted fleet started in over 20 knots. Laurie and Dan won this one, with the Hivey’s again 2nd and Neil Ashby and Bonnie Moody saving their best till last in 3rd.
Once ashore the maths was done and it transpired that Laurie and Dan had beaten Roger and Will on count-back with Nick and Christian a point behind, in one of the closest 800 events for ages. Jamie Morgan and James Sanbury won the silver fleet prize. Many thanks to Grafham for putting on some great racing and turning the starting round so quickly in Sundays freezing conditions. The next event is at Castle Cove at the end of April when hopefully it will have warmed up a bit.
