GUL RS RACING CIRCUIT AT WEYMOUTH AND PORTLAND SAILING ACADEMY JUNE 30/JULY 1. A total of 196 boats in five classes set a new record for numbers competing at a GUL RS Racing Circuit event at Weymouth and Portland Sailing Academy on June 30/July 1. This was the first event that the RS700s competed in and what a performance, 16 boats with some major hot competition, the return of some old RS friends and spectacular action downwind on Saturday. Without doubt a very successful launch of a new class by any criteria. The 196 boats were split over three courses. The fact that Race Officers David Campbell-James, Frank Newton and Richard Stevens ran three good quality races each day in a relatively short space of time speaks volumes for their race management skills and the co-ordination work of the WPSA staff. Of course no event can be a success without the help of the weather gods and were they smiling on Weymouth at the weekend!! 16-22 knots of breeze all day on Saturday from the South West with sunshine all afternoon. Full on Monty sailing, crews going yahoo downwind and a yacht dismasting for good measure; what else could a self respecting dinghy sailor want. Ah yes, beer, Saturday night featured a very large party in one of the old hangers and the video of the Lions stuffing the Wallabies!!! After all this excitement there were many relieved people when Sunday started grey but with a very gentle 5-6 knots from the west. The breeze very slowly built to 10 knots during the day and by the end there was glorious sunshine. Whilst the results showed some people had a weekend of two halves the overall winners showed their true mettle by producing consistent results across some varied conditions. With the Nationals only one month away this weekend again proved that each class has many front-runners with many crews hitting form at the right time; I for one would not like to predict who the winners will be. The GUL RS Racing Circuit is now building very nicely to a really tight finish in all classes; the last two Circuit events of the season will see some major tussles. RS800s What an amazing weekend for the 800s; an entry of 48 boats was mind blowing enough without the full on conditions and standard of racing. Race Officer Richard Stevens varied the style of courses all weekend and I dont think anyone who was there will forget the last two races on Saturday over a fairly short course with a narrow gate downwind. Starts on the short course were everything combined with a willingness to gybe at very short notice. Richard Lovering and Richard Kent were in their element with three bullets, which when you look at the names they were leaving in their wake was an awesome performance. Nick Peters/Caroline Litchfield (4.7.4), Neil Upton- Brown/Roz Allen (3.5.5) and Barrie Edgington/Harvey Hilary (2.2.9) were the only other boats to score three top ten results. Paddy Gamble/Lou Carter was very impressive scoring 2.3 in the last two races. As with all the other classes the change of conditions on Sunday did change the pattern of the racing. This was to be Mike Lennons/Craig Davies day with a 2.1.2 scoreline but even this could not recover a disaster of a Saturday with two no results. Ricky Tagg/Steve Greaves had a terminal argument with another boat on Saturday and had two 49 points but at least 5.2.5 on Sunday restored pride. Lovering and Kent though had two very solid races with 7th and a 8th to give them overall victory with a race to spare. The Peters/Litchfield team were equally secure in second overall with a 6.3 score in race 4 and 5. They made doubly sure of finishing second overall by winning the final race. Upton-Brown/Allen had a very average Sunday but still secured third overall whilst Edgington/Hilary recovered a day that was threatening to go pear shaped by finishing 4th in the final race to claim fourth overall. Lee Sydenham/Anne Vaudrey did their overall Gul Racing Circuit chances a lot of good by finishing 5th and 3rd in the final two races to claim fifth overall. Sydenham has now taking over the overall lead in the GUL RS Racing Circuit just ahead of Steve Irish and the Johnsons. The Hayling trio of Lovering, Peters and Upton- Brown could win the Circuit but will have to produce two really top results at both the remaining GUL RS Racing circuit events. As one of these events is not on the south coast it will be interesting to see if they realise that sailing does place in the frozen north and there are other pages in the map book then those covering the south coast. Both Sydenham and the Johnsons will also be working hard to discard their 10th places they are counting at the moment.
