GUL RS800 Racing Circuit at Weymouth Sailing Academy

by Dave Ellis/Pete Vincent

A fleet of 25 boats weaved their way to Weymouth over the weekend of the 1/2nd July for the latest round of the GUL RS800 Racing Circuit at Weymouth Sailing Academy. They were greeted with a light 8-10 knot breeze.

Some new faces appeared, Geoff Carveth of RS400, Enterprise and Endeavour trophy fame was here to add more competitive depth to the fleet, along with Rob Greenhalgh the last Ultra 30 Grand Prix winner and 49'er sailor.
v It soon became apparent that the fleet was divided on Saturday with the front six boats a considerable distance ahead of the pack. The front runners were Nick Peters who after a disappointing result at Hayling was back with his permanent crew Fiona Sayce and his winning ways. Hot on his heals were the consistent team of David Sayce/Nigel Wakefield with Neil Upton Brown, Geoff Carveth and David Ellis/Mike Bayne all making appearances.

However at the end of day one it was Nick Peters and David Sayce who shared the lead.

Sunday dawned even lighter with no more than 5 knots of breeze. Geoff Carveth posted his first race victory in the class and Neil Upton Brown also took a race victory.

Going into the last race it was Peters/Sayce and Sayce/Wakefield both equal on points. Sayce/Wakefield had a disaster, buried at the start and never able to recover, while Peters/Sayce won the race and the regatta.

There were five different race winners over six races, the fact that Rob Larke/Greebo won a race but could not make the overall prizes demonstrates the strength of depth in the class. The overall prizes also revelled the strength of the Hayling Island fleet with the top four boats all from HISC.

With two rounds of the GUL RS Racing Circuit left there is now an immense three way battle with Peters holding a very slim one point lead over David Syace with the Larkins from Wier Wood only 4 points behind.
A host of national, European and world champions moving into the class it is fast becoming the most competitive asymmetric class in the UK. Come and join us!
