GUL RS800 Racing Circuit at Draycote. 6TH 7TH MAY 2000
Consistency was a truly elusive trait in the 20 boat fleet of RS800s at
Draycote on May 6/7. Warm weather brought a good force 3-4 from the north
east but this breeze was patchy and there real wind bands. The racing
produced five different race winners, many different race leaders
and some huge scores, making for a great weekends racing. There's always
the exception, and this weekend it was Nick Peters and Fiona Sayce from
Hayling Island who won 2 races, were never out of the top 4 and took overall
honours with a race to spare.
Winners of the first GUL RS800 Circuit event at Torquay, Matt and Geoff
Larkin started Sundays racing with a race win and 2 fourths under their
belt, and even following a very frustrating 6,6,8 on the Sunday, managed to
hang on to 2nd overall. Dave Ellis, in his first meeting in the boat,
managed four thirds, and 2 mid fleets for 3rd overall, generally improving
during the event.
Other race winners were Nicki Griffin and Mike Braidley, Chris Feibush and
Animal Parslow, and Paul Bayliss and Ros Knight. Feibush/Parslow won the
final race by a mile from Spod Olive/Martin Brooks to make up for T-boning
Rob Larke in spectacular fashion on Saturday. The team of Bayliss and Knight
also showed that they will be a real force with an impressive victory in
race 5 to make up for an erratic series.
The atmosphere and camaraderie in this newest of fleets is so typical of the
RS scene, with many newcomers enjoying the RS Ball on Saturday night, and
looking forward to the Eurotour event at Hayling over the Bank Holiday
weekend at the end of the month.
