Crew Clothing RS800 Grand Prix

The 2nd round of the Crew Clothing RS800 Grand Prix was held in the picture perfect Devon village of Beer, in what has become a regular favourite for the 800’s due to the great sailing and “nothing is too much trouble” attitude of the club.

With forecasts varying wildly throughout the week, no one was quite sure want to expect on Saturday and as it turned out we got a bit of everything.

Race one started in the prevailing NW at about 10 knots. Dave Hivey and James Stuart lead for 2 laps, but Nick Charles and Christian Humphrey and Tom Halhead and Stu Jagger snuck through on the last lap as the wind died and started to shift.

The breeze then did a 180 as the sea breeze tired to fill in so the excellent race team quickly reset the course and got R2 underway. Charles and Humphrey lead throughout, helped out by many of the boats rounding behind them being called OCS. Halhead and Jagger again finished 2nd with the rest of the fleet finishing just before the breeze died again (perfect timing). It then proceeded to go back to the NW and build to 10-16 Knots. With a forecast for not a lot on Sunday, 2 more races were held to cap of a great days racing. Hivey and Stuart showed there class to win both by some distance, with the rest of the fleet having a royal battle with multiple place changes on every leg.

Sunday dawned as forecast with 5 knots off shore breeze. Halhead and Jagger again showed there mastery of the light stuff to sniggle through to take both races. Hivey and Stuart where equally impressive with 2 2nd and Pete Barton (making a welcome return) and Peter Barton and Chris Feibusch picked up a pair of 3rd.

Thanks again to Beer for a great weekend making the most of some very difficult conditions and serving a mountain of rolls and cake afterwards.
